1. Introduction to Tubing

2. Tubing Size and ASTM B88

2.1 Actual OD versus NPS

2.2 ASTM B88 Exception

3. Applications of Tubing

Heat Exchangers

Instrument Piping

Lubricating Oil Services

Steam Tracing

4. Common Tubing Materials

Tubing में commonly used materials में 18Cr-8Ni family of stainless steels शामिल है।

Material Important Information

5. Pitting and Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking

5.1 Pitting Corrosion

5.2 Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (CSCC)

6. Four Important Risk Factors

A. Presence of Chlorides

External Sources:
  • Insulation materials
  • Deluge water systems
  • Nearby decks और roads की washdown water
Internal Sources:

B. Presence of Water

C. Temperature Above About 140°F (60°C)

D. Tubing Material Stress

7. Inspection and Failure Prevention

8. Alternative Alloy Selection

Application
Incoloy 825 कई elevated-temperature refining applications
Hastelloy C276 Sour water या hot hydrofluoric acid (HF) services, जहां oxidizing species मौजूद हों
Alloy 20Cb3 Sulfuric acid applications

9. Quick Comparison Table

11. Descriptive Questions and Answers

Q1. What is tubing, and how does it differ from piping?

Tubing is generally similar to piping, but is manufactured in many ODs and wall thicknesses. It is generally seamless, though welded tubing is also available. Its stated size is generally actual OD rather than NPS.

Q2. What are the common applications of tubing?

Common applications include heat exchangers, instrument piping, lubricating oil services, steam tracing and similar small-diameter services.

Q3. What is the ASTM B88 tubing size exception?

ASTM B88 tubing, often used for steam tracing, has a size designation 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) less than its actual OD.

Q4. What is CSCC?

CSCC means Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking. It can develop when susceptible material is exposed to chlorides and tensile stress under suitable environmental conditions.

Q5. What are the major sources of chlorides in tubing systems?

External sources include insulation, PVC jacketing, atmosphere, rain, deluge water and washdown water. Internal sources include process streams and potentially hydrotest water.

Q6. Why is 140°F (60°C) important?

It is an approximate temperature concern for chloride-related cracking susceptibility. It is not an absolute threshold because pitting or CSCC may also occur below this temperature under certain conditions.

Q7. How can tubing installation contribute to CSCC?

Tube bending and compression fitting makeup can introduce stress. Residual stresses from manufacturing may also contribute to susceptibility.

Q8. Why may inspection alone be insufficient?

CSCC and pitting failures can be unpredictable. Materials selection, corrosion control and consultation with a materials or corrosion specialist are therefore important.

Q9. Name three alternative alloys and their applications from the reference.
