4.2.20 Gaseous Oxygen-Enhanced Ignition and Combustion

4.2.20.1 Description of Damage

सामान्य वायु (air) में जो कई metals non-flammable होते हैं, वे oxygen या oxygen-enriched air (25% से अधिक oxygen) service में, यहां तक कि low pressure पर भी, flammable हो सकते हैं। यदि system का design, operation और maintenance सही तरीके से न किया जाए, तो कुछ oxygen-enriched gaseous environments में metallic तथा non-metallic components का spontaneous ignition या combustion हो सकता है, जिससे fire और explosion जैसी गंभीर घटनाएँ हो सकती हैं। एक बार ignition हो जाने पर, oxygen की purity, pressure और temperature बढ़ने के साथ metals और non-metals अधिक तीव्रता से जलते हैं।


4.2.20.2 Affected Materials

Carbon Steel और Low Alloy Steel लगभग 15 psig (0.103 MPa) से अधिक low-pressure oxygen service में flammable हो सकते हैं। हालांकि विशेष precautions अपनाकर इन materials का उपयोग high-pressure oxygen service में भी सुरक्षित रूप से किया जा सकता है।

Austenitic Stainless Steel (300 Series SS) low-pressure oxygen के प्रति बेहतर resistance रखते हैं और सामान्यतः लगभग 200 psig (1.38 MPa) से कम pressure पर ignite होना कठिन होता है।

Copper Alloys (55% से अधिक copper वाले) तथा Nickel Alloys (50% से अधिक nickel वाले) अत्यधिक fire resistant होते हैं और सामान्यतः non-flammable माने जाते हैं। Oxygen के साथ उनकी उत्कृष्ट compatibility के कारण इन्हें valves, instrumentation तथा impingement और turbulent service वाले क्षेत्रों में अक्सर उपयोग किया जाता है। Alloy 400 विशेष रूप से अत्यधिक resistant माना जाता है।

हालाँकि Aluminum का उपयोग oxygen cylinders तथा oxygen manufacturing plants में व्यापक रूप से किया जाता है, लेकिन flowing oxygen service में इसका उपयोग सामान्यतः टाला जाता है क्योंकि ignite होने पर यह बहुत तेजी से जलता है और बड़ी मात्रा में energy release करता है।

सबसे आसानी से ignite होने वाले materials में plastics, rubbers, तथा hydrocarbon lubricants शामिल हैं, इसलिए oxygen systems में इनके उपयोग को न्यूनतम रखा जाता है।

Titanium Alloys का उपयोग oxygen तथा oxygen-enriched service में सामान्यतः नहीं किया जाता क्योंकि इनमें ignition energy बहुत कम होती है और combustion के दौरान अत्यधिक energy release होती है। परीक्षणों से यह पाया गया है कि titanium केवल 7 kPa (1 psi absolute) oxygen pressure पर भी combustion को sustain कर सकता है। अधिकांश industry standards oxygen systems में titanium के उपयोग के प्रति सावधानी बरतने की सलाह देते हैं।

Note: ये केवल सामान्य guidelines हैं और इन्हें design criteria के रूप में उपयोग नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।


4.2.20.3 Critical Factors

Oxygen service में ignition और combustion की संभावना को प्रभावित करने वाले प्रमुख factors में system pressure, oxygen concentration, line velocity, component thickness, design, piping configuration, cleanliness तथा temperature शामिल हैं।

High velocity oxygen flow conditions में सबसे बड़ी चिंता flowing oxygen के साथ आने वाले particulates का किसी surface, जैसे pipe bend, से टकराना (impingement) होता है। Carbon steel और stainless steel piping में oxygen velocity को industry standards में दिए गए limits के अनुसार नियंत्रित रखना चाहिए। Allowable velocity pressure और flow condition (direct impingement या non-impingement) पर निर्भर करती है।

Material का temperature उसकी flammability को प्रभावित करता है। Temperature बढ़ने पर ignition और sustained combustion के लिए आवश्यक अतिरिक्त energy कम हो जाती है। वह न्यूनतम temperature जिस पर कोई material विशेष परिस्थितियों में combustion को support कर सके, ignition temperature कहलाता है। अधिकांश alloys के published ignition temperatures उनके melting temperature के आसपास होते हैं। हालांकि वास्तविक systems में particle impact तथा अन्य mechanisms के कारण room temperature या उससे कम temperature पर भी ignition और combustion हो सकता है।

System cleanliness oxygen systems के सुरक्षित संचालन के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। Construction या maintenance के दौरान metallic fines, oils, greases अथवा अन्य hydrocarbon contaminants का प्रवेश बाद में startup के समय fire का कारण बन सकता है। ये contaminants आसानी से ignite हो जाते हैं और बड़े fire या system breach का कारण बन सकते हैं।

Impingement areas, जैसे sharp elbows, tees और valves, straight pipe की तुलना में अधिक ignition risk रखते हैं। Flowing oxygen में उपस्थित particles इन क्षेत्रों से टकराकर ignition शुरू कर सकते हैं। Valves और regulators को खोलने या बंद करने पर उच्च turbulence और impingement उत्पन्न होती है, इसलिए केवल oxygen service के लिए विशेष रूप से designed और cleaned components का ही उपयोग किया जाना चाहिए।


4.2.20.4 Affected Units or Equipment

ये guidelines उन सभी units पर लागू होती हैं जहाँ combustion या process requirements के लिए oxygen अथवा oxygen-enriched air का उपयोग किया जाता है।

Refineries और process plants में oxygen का उपयोग कई स्थानों पर किया जाता है, जैसे Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU), Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU), Gasification Units तथा Partial Oxidation (POX) Units।

विशेष रूप से oxygen piping systems, valves, regulators तथा अन्य impingement areas ignition और combustion damage के प्रति संवेदनशील होते हैं। Seats और seals जैसे non-metallic components metals की तुलना में अधिक आसानी से ignite हो सकते हैं।


4.2.20.5 Appearance or Morphology of Damage

कुछ मामलों में कोई छोटा component, जैसे valve seat, जल सकता है लेकिन आसपास के materials को ignite नहीं करता और बाहर से fire damage का कोई स्पष्ट संकेत नहीं दिखाई देता। ऐसी स्थिति में समस्या का पता तब चलता है जब component को हटाकर निरीक्षण किया जाता है क्योंकि वह ठीक से कार्य नहीं कर रहा होता।

कई बार बाहरी सतह पर दिखाई देने वाला heat damage, जैसे glowing pipe या heat tint, internal fire का संकेत हो सकता है। यह स्थिति system के किसी low point या अन्य location पर flammable debris के जमा होने तथा उसके combustion या smoldering के कारण उत्पन्न हो सकती है।

सबसे गंभीर स्थिति तब होती है जब fire के कारण pressure envelope टूट जाता है। Oxygen fires metals को तीव्रता से जला सकती हैं और व्यापक structural damage का कारण बन सकती हैं।


4.2.20.6 Prevention / Mitigation

Oxygen fires अचानक होने वाली घटनाएँ हैं और ये progressive degradation का परिणाम नहीं होतीं। इसलिए prevention सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपाय है।

System को हमेशा साफ रखना चाहिए तथा maintenance या inspection के बाद thorough cleaning की जानी चाहिए।

Oxygen velocity को recommended limits के भीतर बनाए रखना चाहिए। यदि संभव हो, तो gaseous oxygen service में 100 ft/sec (30 m/sec) से अधिक velocity से बचना चाहिए।

सुनिश्चित करें कि replacement components oxygen service के लिए उपयुक्त हों।

Maintenance के बाद oxygen systems की thorough cleaning अनिवार्य रूप से की जानी चाहिए।

Lubricants का उपयोग न्यूनतम रखें और केवल oxygen-compatible lubricants का ही उपयोग करें।

अनावश्यक रूप से oxygen systems को visual inspection या अन्य उद्देश्यों के लिए न खोलें क्योंकि इससे contamination का खतरा बढ़ जाता है।

यदि oxygen system को अधिक pressure, temperature या velocity पर operate करने के लिए modify किया जा रहा हो, तो पहले विस्तृत engineering review किया जाना चाहिए।

System में अचानक pressure changes को न्यूनतम रखना चाहिए। यदि किसी valve को तेजी से खोलने के कारण high-pressure oxygen कम pressure वाले system में प्रवेश करती है, तो system के dead-end क्षेत्र में oxygen की adiabatic compression के कारण heating होती है। यह heating plastics, rubbers, valve seats, seals तथा non-metallic hoses को ignite कर सकती है, हालांकि सामान्यतः metals को नहीं।

Oxygen piping systems में plastic pipe का उपयोग नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।

Startup के दौरान oxygen piping और systems के आसपास personnel activities को न्यूनतम रखा जाना चाहिए ताकि किसी ignition event की स्थिति में जोखिम कम रहे।


4.2.20.7 Inspection and Monitoring

अधिकांश commercial oxygen सामान्य ambient temperature पर dry और non-corrosive होती है। चूँकि कुछ परिस्थितियों में metals का ignition अचानक और catastrophic रूप से हो सकता है, इसलिए इस प्रकार के damage का advance inspection करना कठिन होता है।

किसी छोटे fire के संकेत, जैसे external heat damage, malfunctioning valves या non-metallic components की खराबी, संभावित समस्या की ओर संकेत कर सकते हैं।

Blacklight inspection का उपयोग hydrocarbon contamination की पहचान के लिए किया जा सकता है।


4.2.20.8 Related Mechanisms

इस damage mechanism से सीधे संबंधित कोई अन्य mechanism लागू नहीं है।
